Near to the Wild Heart

directed by Ildiko Nemeth

A viper -- a creature straggling and alone -- a little live egg -- a girl. Joana, the heroine of Near to the Wild Heart, is different things to different people. But as she wanders through the pathways of memory and imagination, Joana seeks to know herself on her own terms. This multimedia theatre piece, based on the novel by Clarice Lispector and adapted for the stage by Ildiko Nemeth, evokes a rich, expansive female interior encompassing Joana’s poignant childhood and her resistance to the concept of conventional marriage and happiness. Combining vivid projection design with music, lighting, and Lispector’s sensual prose, it creates an immersive experience that invites audiences into the inner world of a singular, haunting character.
